Behind the wheel

Upper Engadin Lakes: Silvaplana and Sils. A short, easy drive along the lake chain that suits a first day behind the wheel. Parking is simple at the lakeside villages, but mornings are quieter in high season.

Maloja Pass and the Bregaglia Valley. The road drops from the Engadin plateau in a run of hairpins toward Italy, so a convertible or a responsive sports car makes sense in summer. Soglio is a good place to stop. Tell us in advance if you plan to cross the border.

Bernina Pass and Poschiavo. A high-alpine crossing with long sweeping sections and open views, leading south to Poschiavo. Check road and weather conditions before you leave in winter, when an AWD SUV is the sensible choice.

Julier Pass to Savognin. The northbound route out of St. Moritz toward central Graubünden, and the natural line for guests continuing to Zurich in an AWD SUV. Allow extra time on winter mornings.

Zuoz and the Lower Engadin. Head down-valley to Zuoz and on toward Scuol for a quieter day among traditional Engadin villages. Parking in the village centres is limited, so a compact grand tourer is easier than a large SUV.
