Cassis and the Calanques coast. Pale limestone cliffs drop to small turquoise inlets on this stretch. Cassis has narrow streets and busy parking in high season, so plan an early start or a late-afternoon arrival. The Frioul Islands are reached by boat from the Vieux-Port, so leave the car parked for that outing.
Route des Crêtes to La Ciotat. A cliff-top road between Cassis and La Ciotat with open sea views and long, sweeping bends. It suits a morning drive with a relaxed pace, and it is worth checking local road and access conditions before you set off.
Aix-en-Provence. A natural choice for a business lunch or an evening out, with a clear motorway run from Marseille. Park in a secure car park near the old centre rather than hunting for a kerbside space.
Luberon villages: Gordes and Lourmarin. Stone villages, vineyards and quiet country roads reward a full day behind the wheel. The village centres are tight, so use the designated car parks on the edge and walk in.
Côte Bleue: Carry-le-Rouet and Sausset-les-Pins. A quieter coastal road west of Marseille, with small harbours and rocky coves. It makes an easy half-day drive and a calmer alternative to the busier eastern coast in summer.
