Behind the wheel

Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo. The core of a Sardinian rental. Short hops link Porto Cervo, Baja Sardinia and Cala di Volpe, so a sports car or convertible suits dinner reservations and beach-club days. Parking near the marina is busy in July and August, so plan arrivals and valet stops in advance.

Olbia and Porto Rotondo. Olbia is the natural point to collect a car after landing, and Porto Rotondo is a short drive up the coast. The main roads are smooth and well suited to a grand tourer. Allow extra time on peak summer weekends, when traffic around the port and airport builds.

Palau and Santa Teresa Gallura. Head north into Gallura for granite headlands and views across to the Maddalena archipelago. Palau is the departure point for ferries to La Maddalena, so check crossing arrangements before taking a car. The roads bend and rise, which suits a driver who wants a car with real steering feel.

Alghero to Bosa. A west-coast day on one of the island's best-known scenic roads, with cliffs on one side and open sea on the other. Sections are narrow and winding, so a lower-powered, well-balanced car is easier to enjoy than the widest option in the fleet. Start early for softer light and lighter traffic.

Cagliari and Villasimius. The south offers a different tempo: city dining in Cagliari, then the coast road towards Villasimius and its sandy coves. Beach parking fills quickly in high season, so arrive before midday or choose a restaurant stop instead. Suitable for guests flying into Cagliari rather than the north.
