Behind the wheel

Ludwigsburg and the Neckar vineyards. A short, easy first drive north of the city. Ludwigsburg Palace and its formal gardens suit a relaxed morning. The vineyard roads along the Neckar nearby are well suited to a grand tourer. Visit at weekends outside peak hours, when parking near the palace is simpler.

Rems Valley wine country. East of Stuttgart, the Remstal runs through terraced slopes and small wine villages such as Weinstadt. The roads are narrow in places and shared with cyclists and vineyard traffic, so a calm pace suits it. Many estates have limited parking, so plan lunch stops ahead.

Swabian Alb and Lichtenstein Castle. The climb onto the Swabian Alb gives you sweeping bends and open plateau roads. Schloss Lichtenstein is the natural destination for a half-day outing. Start early in summer, as viewpoints and car parks fill by late morning.

Black Forest High Road to Baden-Baden. West of Stuttgart, the Schwarzwaldhochstraße crosses forested ridges before reaching Baden-Baden. It is a driver's route, but it draws motorcyclists and day-trippers on dry weekends, so a weekday or early start makes the drive smoother. Finish with dinner or the spa town's promenades.

Heidelberg and the lower Neckar valley. A longer day out that pairs autobahn driving with a river-valley return. Heidelberg's old town is best explored on foot, so use a hotel or a garage rather than hunting for street parking. Allow time for the return so the drive stays unhurried.
