Behind the wheel

Playa de San Juan and El Campello. The closest beach run from the city, and an easy first drive in a high-powered car. The coastal road is mostly straightforward, and the beachfront promenades suit a relaxed lunch stop. In July and August, arrive early for parking near the sand.

Santa Pola and Cabo de Santa Pola. A flat drive south that suits families and first-time renters. Walk the harbour front in Santa Pola, then continue to the cape for open sea views and quieter beaches. Low-slung sports cars are comfortable on this route, though sandy car parks call for some care.

Villajoyosa and Altea. Head north along the coast to the colourful waterfront houses of Villajoyosa, then on to Altea's whitewashed old town. The old streets are narrow, so park at the edge and walk up. Late afternoon is the best time to arrive for the light on the bay.

Calpe and the Peñón de Ifach. The rock is visible from far along the road, which makes it a clear destination for a half-day drive. Choose a car you are happy to leave in a public car park while you walk the seafront or have lunch. Heavy summer traffic is better avoided by going before midday.

Guadalest and the Sierra de Aitana. Turn inland for mountain bends and cooler air away from the beaches. The road up to Guadalest rewards confident drivers with open views over the reservoir valley. It is a sound choice for guests who want a more engaging drive after a few beach days.
