Behind the wheel

Taunus: Königstein and Kronberg. Wooded roads and hillside villages lie just north-west of the city, which makes the Taunus a good first outing in a performance car. Kronberg and Königstein have cafés and restaurants where a short stop is easy. Go on a weekday morning for quieter bends.

Rheingau: Eltville to Rüdesheim. The road follows the Rhine past vineyards and wine estates. It suits a relaxed grand tourer with the roof open. Allow time to book estate tastings in advance, and arrange parking beforehand in Rüdesheim, where the old town is busy in high season.

Wiesbaden and Mainz. Two state capitals within easy reach of Frankfurt, with spa architecture on one side of the Rhine and a historic old town on the other. This is the practical choice for a client dinner or a theatre evening. Use hotel or garage parking rather than street spaces.

Bergstraße to Heidelberg. Head south on the A5 and then along the Bergstraße, where orchards and vineyards run beside the Odenwald foothills. Heidelberg's castle and old town are the destination. Plan to leave the car in a central garage and explore the narrow streets on foot.

Spessart and Miltenberg. East of Frankfurt, forest roads lead towards the Main and the half-timbered town of Miltenberg. Traffic is lighter than on the western routes, so it works well for a longer, steadier drive. Check opening hours for lunch stops if you travel midweek.
