Elbchaussee and Blankenese. The riverside road west of the centre runs past villas, old trees and views over the Elbe. Early mornings and weekday evenings are calmer. Blankenese has steep, narrow lanes and limited parking, so leave the car at the edge and walk down.
Altes Land orchards. South-west of the city, the dike roads around Jork and Stade run between fruit orchards and half-timbered farmhouses. Blossom season in spring is the draw. The lanes are narrow and shared with farm traffic, so this is a relaxed, low-speed drive.
Lüneburg Heath. Heather, juniper and quiet country roads lie south of Hamburg. Late summer is the most colourful time and weekends can be busy. Some heath villages restrict car access, so check where to park before you set off.
Lübeck and the Baltic coast. Lübeck's brick old town is best visited by parking at its edge and walking in. From there, Travemünde and the Baltic beach towns continue the route. Summer weekends bring heavier coastal traffic, so an early start helps.
Cuxhaven and the Elbe estuary. The route follows the Elbe towards the North Sea, where container ships pass close to shore. It makes a full-day drive, so agree your return arrangements with us in advance. Wind and tides shape the coast, so dress for a breezy shoreline.
