Sintra and the Serra de Sintra. Palaces and forested hills sit a short drive west of the city. The roads climb and narrow near the historic centre and parking fills early, so a compact, well-balanced car and a morning start make the day easier.
Cascais and Estoril coast. The Marginal coast road links Estoril, Cascais and the Atlantic viewpoints beyond. It suits an open-road grand tourer. Plan to park in or near Cascais town rather than driving the seafront streets repeatedly.
Arrábida and Sesimbra. Cross the river to the Serra da Arrábida for winding coastal roads, limestone cliffs and beach views. Surfaces and bends reward a driver who enjoys steering feel, and weekday drives are usually calmer than summer weekends.
Óbidos and the Silver Coast. North of Lisbon, the walled town of Óbidos works well as a half-day destination. Leave the car outside the old walls, walk the cobbled lanes, then continue towards the Atlantic coast if time allows.
Alentejo wine country and Évora. East of the Tagus, motorway gives way to open, quiet country roads between cork oaks and vineyards. Évora is a natural base for lunch or a winery visit, and the longer distances suit a comfortable, high-powered car.
