Behind the wheel

El Saler and the Albufera. The closest escape from the city. The road south runs between the Mediterranean and the Albufera lagoon, with pine-backed beaches and rice fields on either side. It works well for a short morning drive or a sunset return. At weekends and in summer, arrive early for beach-side parking.

Sagunto and the northern coast. Head north to Sagunto, where the hilltop castle and Roman theatre overlook the town. Port-side restaurants at Puerto de Sagunto suit a long lunch. Parking in the old town is tight, so leave the car at the lower streets and walk up.

Xàtiva and the inland valleys. Xàtiva sits inland to the south-west, below a castle that dominates the skyline. The drive is a good choice for clients who want open road rather than coastline. Park in the lower town and allow time for the climb to the castle on foot.

Utiel-Requena wine country. West of Valencia, the road climbs into vineyards and small bodegas around Requena. Book tastings in advance and plan a designated driver, or taste in small measures and take bottles home. Rural lanes are quiet, but low-slung sports cars need care on farm tracks.

Dénia and Jávea on the Costa Blanca. A longer coastal day towards Alicante, ending in Dénia's harbour or Jávea's old quarter. The route suits grand tourers and convertibles, with sea views for much of the final stretch. Summer afternoons bring heavy traffic in both towns, so plan lunch or a late arrival to avoid the peak.
