Weggis and Vitznau on the Rigi shore. The lake road east of Lucerne runs through small harbour villages at the foot of the Rigi. It suits a relaxed grand tourer, and the stretch is best driven outside peak weekend hours. Lakeside parking in the villages is limited, so plan your stop before you arrive.
Pilatus and Alpnachstad. A short drive from the city centre brings you to the Pilatus base stations at Kriens and Alpnachstad. Reach them early in the day to avoid the busiest parking, then continue along the Alpnachersee towards Obwalden.
Engelberg valley. The road climbs steadily from Stans into a high Alpine valley beneath the Titlis massif. It is a rewarding drive in a powerful coupe or convertible. Allow time for mountain weather, which can shift quickly even in summer.
Gotthard and Andermatt. The Gotthard corridor is the main route south from Central Switzerland and the gateway to Andermatt and the high passes. Pass roads are seasonal, so check their opening status before you set out. The driving is serious and rewards a car with real power and composure.
Axenstrasse to Brunnen and Flüelen. This route follows the Uri arm of Lake Lucerne, with tunnels and cliffside sections above the water. It makes a good half-day circuit that brings you back to Lucerne for dinner. Keep a steady pace here, as the road is narrow in places.
