Behind the wheel

Lake Como: Cernobbio to Bellagio. The classic reason to rent a sports car from Milan. The autostrada gets you to the lower lake quickly, but the lakeside roads are narrow and slow, so a compact, easy-to-place car suits them better than the widest option. In summer, arrive early for parking in Bellagio and Cernobbio.

Franciacorta Wine Country. Rolling vineyard lanes between Lake Iseo and Brescia, with sparkling wine estates and relaxed restaurants. Roads are open and uncongested, which suits a grand tourer or convertible. Book tastings in advance and plan a designated driver.

Bergamo and Città Alta. A straightforward drive east of Milan. Leave the car in the lower town and take the funicular up to the walled old city, as the upper streets are tight and not made for low-slung cars. An easy half-day or lunch run.

Lake Maggiore and Stresa. A good alternative when Como is crowded. The approach is fast autostrada, then calmer lakeside driving towards Stresa and the Borromean Islands ferry points. Best for a leisurely day with a refined touring car rather than a fast-paced route.

Dolomite Approaches via Lake Garda. For clients who want mountain roads, head east past Brescia and Lake Garda towards Trentino and the foothills of the Dolomites. It is a long day, so start early and treat it as a full-day or overnight plan. Check mountain pass conditions before departure, especially outside summer.
