Behind the wheel

Méribel and the Allues valley. The natural first drive from Courchevel, linking two of the Trois Vallées' best-known resorts. It suits a lunch reservation or an evening out, and the road rewards a smooth, unhurried car. In peak ski weeks, expect busier traffic and limited parking in the resort centres.

Val Thorens and the Belleville valley. A route through Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires up to Val Thorens, one of the highest resorts in the Trois Vallées. It is a good day for a grand tourer or SUV with a comfortable cabin. In winter, check road conditions before setting out and plan where you will park on arrival.

Cormet de Roselend and Beaufort. A summer drive over the Cormet de Roselend, past Lac de Roselend and down towards the village of Beaufort, the home of Beaufort cheese. It is best suited to a sports car or convertible on a clear day. High passes are generally seasonal, so confirm they are open before you go.

Albertville and Lac d'Annecy. Head down the Tarentaise valley to Albertville, the 1992 Olympic host town, then continue to Annecy and its lake for a change of scenery from the high mountains. This is the longest outing on the list, so a roomy, comfortable car and an early start are worth considering.

Pralognan-la-Vanoise. A quieter Savoyard village at the edge of the Vanoise national park, reached by a valley road that feels far from the resort crowds. It suits a relaxed lunch stop and an afternoon of mountain views. Parking in the village is usually straightforward outside the busiest holiday periods.
