Behind the wheel

The Three Corniches to Èze and La Turbie. The Basse, Moyenne and Grande Corniche climb the hills east of Nice, each with a different character. The upper road suits a confident drive with wide views. Èze village is steep and narrow, so park at the edge and walk in, especially in a low-slung car.

Villefranche-sur-Mer and Cap-Ferrat. A short drive from Nice, this stretch combines the harbour at Villefranche with the quiet residential roads of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Roads are tight and parking is limited in high season, so aim for a morning start and choose a compact stop for lunch.

Monaco and Menton. Continue along the coast to Monaco, then on to Menton near the Italian border. Monaco has underground car parks near the main sights, which suit a valuable car better than street parking. Weekend and event traffic can slow the approach, so plan the timing around it.

Antibes, Cap d'Antibes and Cannes. Head west along the coast for the ramparts of Antibes, the villa-lined roads of Cap d'Antibes and the seafront at Cannes. The coastal route is busiest in summer afternoons, so leave early or travel in the evening for a smoother drive.

Vence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the Hill Villages. Inland, the roads above Nice offer a quieter drive through Vence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the villages beyond. The bends reward a well-balanced sports car. Parking at the most visited villages is usually outside the old centre, so allow time for a short walk.
