Behind the wheel

Cap d'Antibes coastal road. The most natural first drive from Antibes. The seafront roads run past Plage de la Garoupe and the private villa walls of the cape. They are narrow and slow in high season, so go early in the morning or toward sunset. A compact-bodied sports car or a convertible suits this stretch better than a wide, low-slung one.

Cannes and the Croisette. A short coastal run to Cannes, with the Lérins Islands visible offshore and reached by boat from the port. Plan hotel or garage parking in advance rather than looking for street spaces, especially during festival and event weeks. It works well for a lunch or an evening arrival.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Vence. Head inland for winding hill roads, galleries and village lunches. Cars are generally best left in the car parks outside the old village centres, and you finish the last stretch on foot. Mid-morning departures usually mean quieter roads than the afternoon return.

Nice, the Corniches and Monaco. Drive east along the Basse, Moyenne or Grande Corniche, with Èze and the Cap Ferrat peninsula on the way. The three roads give different views and different driving rhythms. In Monaco, book hotel or public garage parking ahead; central streets are tight and traffic builds at peak hours.

Saint-Tropez via the Esterel coast. The longer day out: the red Esterel rock meets the sea along the coastal road, then the route continues to the Saint-Tropez peninsula. In summer, traffic into the village slows considerably, so leave early or plan an overnight stay. Add fuel stops and a full-tank return to the schedule.
